Magnesium Alloy ML5-T2 vs ML5-T6

Magnesium Alloy · ML5 temper comparison

ML5-T2 and ML5-T6 are two conditions of the same magnesium alloy grade, ML5: T2 (cooled from hot working, cold worked and naturally aged) versus T6 (solution heat treated and artificially aged). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. ML5-T6 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 135 MPa (19.6 ksi) against 85 MPa (12.3 ksi) for ML5-T2, about 59% more; tensile strength follows at 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) vs 160 MPa (23.2 ksi). ML5-T6 is the more ductile: elongation 4% versus 3% for ML5-T2, and ML5-T6 is harder (70 HB vs 52 HB). ML5-T6 runs hotter in service (150°C vs 120°C continuous).

ML5-T6Choose it when strength drives the design, or when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded.

ML5-T2 vs ML5-T6 — frequently asked

Is ML5-T6 stronger than ML5-T2?

Yes. ML5-T6 has a typical yield strength of 135 MPa (19.6 ksi) against 85 MPa (12.3 ksi) for ML5-T2 — about 59% more. Tensile strength is 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) vs 160 MPa (23.2 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, T2 or T6?

T4 is the default ML5 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither T2 nor T6). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which welds better, ML5-T2 or ML5-T6?

ML5-T2. Its weldability rates very good (70/100) against good (65/100) for ML5-T6.
