Magnesium Alloy ML5-T1 vs ML5-T2

Magnesium Alloy · ML5 temper comparison

ML5-T1 and ML5-T2 are two conditions of the same magnesium alloy grade, ML5: T1 (cooled from hot working and naturally aged) versus T2 (cooled from hot working, cold worked and naturally aged). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. ML5-T1 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 110 MPa (16 ksi) against 85 MPa (12.3 ksi) for ML5-T2, about 29% more; tensile strength follows at 195 MPa (28.3 ksi) vs 160 MPa (23.2 ksi). In exchange, ML5-T2 is the more ductile: elongation 3% versus 2% for ML5-T1, and ML5-T1 is harder (65 HB vs 52 HB). On the shop floor, ML5-T2 welds better (very good vs good).

ML5-T1 vs ML5-T2 — frequently asked

Is ML5-T1 stronger than ML5-T2?

Yes. ML5-T1 has a typical yield strength of 110 MPa (16 ksi) against 85 MPa (12.3 ksi) for ML5-T2 — about 29% more. Tensile strength is 195 MPa (28.3 ksi) vs 160 MPa (23.2 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, T1 or T2?

T4 is the default ML5 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither T1 nor T2). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which welds better, ML5-T1 or ML5-T2?

ML5-T2. Its weldability rates very good (70/100) against good (60/100) for ML5-T1.

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in ML5-T1 and ML5-T2 side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
