Aluminum CP-Al-H12 vs CP-Al-H16

Aluminum · CP-Al temper comparison

CP-Al-H12 and CP-Al-H16 are two conditions of the same aluminum grade, CP-Al: H12 (strain hardened, quarter hard) versus H16 (strain hardened, three-quarter hard). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. CP-Al-H16 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 115 MPa (16.7 ksi) against 75 MPa (10.9 ksi) for CP-Al-H12, about 53% more; tensile strength follows at 130 MPa (18.9 ksi) vs 95 MPa (13.8 ksi). In exchange, CP-Al-H12 is the more ductile: elongation 12% versus 5% for CP-Al-H16, and CP-Al-H16 is harder (35 HB vs 26 HB). CP-Al-H12 runs hotter in service (140°C vs 120°C continuous).

CP-Al-H12 vs CP-Al-H16 — frequently asked

Is CP-Al-H16 stronger than CP-Al-H12?

Yes. CP-Al-H16 has a typical yield strength of 115 MPa (16.7 ksi) against 75 MPa (10.9 ksi) for CP-Al-H12 — about 53% more. Tensile strength is 130 MPa (18.9 ksi) vs 95 MPa (13.8 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, H12 or H16?

AB is the default CP-Al condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither H12 nor H16). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, CP-Al-H12 or CP-Al-H16?

CP-Al-H16. Its machinability rates fair (38/100) against poor (33/100) for CP-Al-H12.
