Aluminum A20X-HIP vs A20X-T6

Aluminum · A20X temper comparison

A20X-HIP and A20X-T6 are two conditions of the same aluminum grade, A20X: HIP (hot isostatic pressed) versus T6 (solution heat treated and artificially aged). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. A20X-T6 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 425 MPa (61.6 ksi) against 200 MPa (29 ksi) for A20X-HIP, about 113% more; tensile strength follows at 495 MPa (71.8 ksi) vs 355 MPa (51.5 ksi). In exchange, A20X-HIP is the more ductile: elongation 18% versus 9% for A20X-T6, and A20X-T6 is harder (140 HB vs 87 HB). A20X-T6 runs hotter in service (180°C vs 150°C continuous) and A20X-HIP conducts heat better (135 W/m·K vs 115 W/m·K).

A20X-HIP vs A20X-T6 — frequently asked

Is A20X-T6 stronger than A20X-HIP?

Yes. A20X-T6 has a typical yield strength of 425 MPa (61.6 ksi) against 200 MPa (29 ksi) for A20X-HIP — about 113% more. Tensile strength is 495 MPa (71.8 ksi) vs 355 MPa (51.5 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HIP or T6?

As Printed is the default A20X condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither HIP nor T6). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

When should I choose A20X-HIP over A20X-T6?

Pick A20X-HIP when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded. Pick A20X-T6 when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.
