Titanium Ti-17 BSTA vs Ti-17-ST
Titanium · Ti-17 temper comparison
Ti-17 BSTA and Ti-17-ST are two conditions of the same titanium grade, Ti-17: BSTA (beta solution treated (above beta transus ~890-900 °C) and aged) versus ST (solution annealed). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. Ti-17 BSTA is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,020 MPa (148 ksi) against 880 MPa (128 ksi) for Ti-17-ST, about 16% more; tensile strength follows at 1,100 MPa (160 ksi) vs 950 MPa (138 ksi). In exchange, Ti-17-ST is the more ductile: elongation 15% versus 7% for Ti-17 BSTA, and Ti-17 BSTA is harder (36 HRC vs 31 HRC). Ti-17 BSTA runs hotter in service (400°C vs 300°C continuous). On the shop floor, Ti-17-ST welds better (fair vs poor).
Ti-17 BSTAChoose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.
Ti-17-STChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when it will be welded.
Ti-17 BSTA vs Ti-17-ST: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all titanium grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

Ti-17 BSTA vs Ti-17-ST — frequently asked
Is Ti-17 BSTA stronger than Ti-17-ST?
Yes. Ti-17 BSTA has a typical yield strength of 1,020 MPa (148 ksi) against 880 MPa (128 ksi) for Ti-17-ST — about 16% more. Tensile strength is 1,100 MPa (160 ksi) vs 950 MPa (138 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, BSTA or ST?
STA is the default Ti-17 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither BSTA nor ST). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which welds better, Ti-17 BSTA or Ti-17-ST?
Ti-17-ST. Its weldability rates fair (38/100) against poor (28/100) for Ti-17 BSTA.
