Titanium Grade 2-CW vs Grade 2-O

Titanium · Grade 2 temper comparison

Grade 2-CW and Grade 2-O are two conditions of the same titanium grade, Grade 2: CW (cold worked) versus O (annealed). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. Grade 2-CW is the stronger of the two: yield strength 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) against 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) for Grade 2-O, about 45% more; tensile strength follows at 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) vs 440 MPa (63.8 ksi). In exchange, Grade 2-O is the more ductile: elongation 28% versus 14% for Grade 2-CW, and Grade 2-CW is harder (210 HB vs 150 HB). Grade 2-O runs hotter in service (300°C vs 250°C continuous). On the shop floor, Grade 2-O welds better (excellent vs very good).

Grade 2-CWChoose it when strength drives the design.

Grade 2-OChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.

Grade 2-CW vs Grade 2-O — frequently asked

Is Grade 2-CW stronger than Grade 2-O?

Yes. Grade 2-CW has a typical yield strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) against 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) for Grade 2-O — about 45% more. Tensile strength is 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) vs 440 MPa (63.8 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, CW or O?

O is the default Grade 2 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, Grade 2-CW or Grade 2-O?

Grade 2-CW, by a small margin. Both rate fair for machinability — 48/100 against 40/100 for Grade 2-O; for welding the order is Grade 2-O first (excellent, 90/100) then Grade 2-CW (very good, 80/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in Grade 2-CW and Grade 2-O side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
