Steel W5-ANN vs W5-HR
Steel · W5 temper comparison
W5-ANN and W5-HR are two conditions of the same steel grade, W5: ANN (annealed) versus HR (hot rolled). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. W5-HR is the stronger of the two: yield strength 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) against 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) for W5-ANN, about 20% more; tensile strength follows at 850 MPa (123 ksi) vs 690 MPa (100 ksi). In exchange, W5-ANN is the more ductile: elongation 25% versus 15% for W5-HR, and W5-HR is harder (255 HB vs 200 HB). On the shop floor, W5-ANN machines more easily (good vs fair).
W5-ANNChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.
W5-HRChoose it when strength drives the design.
W5-ANN vs W5-HR: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

W5-ANN vs W5-HR — frequently asked
Is W5-HR stronger than W5-ANN?
Yes. W5-HR has a typical yield strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) against 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) for W5-ANN — about 20% more. Tensile strength is 850 MPa (123 ksi) vs 690 MPa (100 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, ANN or HR?
ANN is the default W5 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, W5-ANN or W5-HR?
W5-ANN. Its machinability rates good (55/100) against fair (42/100) for W5-HR.
