Steel T9-CD vs T9-N

Steel · T9 temper comparison

T9-CD and T9-N are two conditions of the same steel grade, T9: CD (cold drawn) versus N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. T9-CD is the stronger of the two: yield strength 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) against 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) for T9-N, about 32% more. In exchange, T9-N is the more ductile: elongation 10% versus 8% for T9-CD, and T9-N is harder (255 HB vs 230 HB). T9-N runs hotter in service (300°C vs 250°C continuous). On the shop floor, T9-CD machines more easily (fair vs poor).

T9-CDChoose it when strength drives the design, or when the part is machined in volume.

T9-NChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.

T9-CD vs T9-N — frequently asked

Is T9-CD stronger than T9-N?

Yes. T9-CD has a typical yield strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) against 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) for T9-N — about 32% more. Tensile strength is 800 MPa (116 ksi) vs 830 MPa (120 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, CD or N?

A is the default T9 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither CD nor N). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, T9-CD or T9-N?

T9-CD. Its machinability rates fair (40/100) against poor (30/100) for T9-N.
