Steel T6-ANN vs T6 HT-65
Steel · T6 temper comparison
T6-ANN and T6 HT-65 are two conditions of the same steel grade, T6: ANN (annealed) versus HT-65 (hardened & tempered). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. T6 HT-65 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 2,000 MPa (290 ksi) against 590 MPa (85.6 ksi) for T6-ANN, about 3.4 times as much; tensile strength follows at 2,200 MPa (319 ksi) vs 900 MPa (131 ksi). In exchange, T6-ANN is the more ductile: elongation 12% versus 0.5% for T6 HT-65, and T6 HT-65 is harder (860 HV vs 275 HV). T6 HT-65 runs hotter in service (620°C vs 500°C continuous). On the shop floor, T6-ANN machines more easily (poor vs not recommended).
T6-ANNChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part is machined in volume.
T6 HT-65Choose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.
T6-ANN vs T6 HT-65: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

T6-ANN vs T6 HT-65 — frequently asked
Is T6 HT-65 stronger than T6-ANN?
Yes. T6 HT-65 has a typical yield strength of 2,000 MPa (290 ksi) against 590 MPa (85.6 ksi) for T6-ANN — about 3.4 times as much. Tensile strength is 2,200 MPa (319 ksi) vs 900 MPa (131 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, ANN or HT-65?
ANN is the default T6 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, T6-ANN or T6 HT-65?
T6-ANN. Its machinability rates poor (25/100) against not recommended (5/100) for T6 HT-65; for welding the order is T6-ANN first (not recommended, 12/100) then T6 HT-65 (not recommended, 5/100).
