Steel T12-CD vs T12-N

Steel · T12 temper comparison

T12-CD and T12-N are two conditions of the same steel grade, T12: CD (cold drawn) versus N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. T12-CD is the stronger of the two: yield strength 700 MPa (102 ksi) against 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) for T12-N, about 27% more. In exchange, T12-N is the more ductile: elongation 10% versus 8% for T12-CD, and T12-N is harder (285 HB vs 255 HB). T12-N runs hotter in service (200°C vs 180°C continuous). On the shop floor, T12-CD machines more easily (fair vs poor).

T12-CD vs T12-N — frequently asked

Is T12-CD stronger than T12-N?

Yes. T12-CD has a typical yield strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) against 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) for T12-N — about 27% more. Tensile strength is 880 MPa (128 ksi) vs 1,000 MPa (145 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, CD or N?

A is the default T12 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither CD nor N). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, T12-CD or T12-N?

T12-CD. Its machinability rates fair (44/100) against poor (30/100) for T12-N.
