Steel T1 vs T4

Steel · grade comparison

Steel T1 and T4 are both steel grades. T4 is the stronger of the two: tensile strength 950 MPa (138 ksi) against 860 MPa (125 ksi) for T1, about 10% more. In exchange, T1 is the more ductile: elongation 20% versus 12% for T4, and T4 is harder (255 HB vs 235 HB). T4 runs hotter in service (500°C vs 400°C continuous) and T4 conducts heat better (24 W/m·K vs 21 W/m·K). On the shop floor, T1 sits in a lower cost tier (premium, $$$) than T4 (high, $$$$).

T1Choose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when cost is the deciding factor.

T4Choose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.

T1 vs T4 — frequently asked

Is T4 stronger than T1?

Yes. T4 has a typical tensile strength of 950 MPa (138 ksi) against 860 MPa (125 ksi) for T1 — about 10% more.

Which is cheaper, T1 or T4?

T1 is the lower-cost material: it sits in the premium tier ($$$) while T4 is high ($$$$). Part price depends far more on geometry, tolerance and quantity than on raw stock — upload a CAD file for a live quote.

Which is easier to machine, T1 or T4?

T1. Its machinability rates fair (35/100) against poor (30/100) for T4; for welding the order is T4 first (poor, 20/100) then T1 (poor, 15/100).
