Steel SUM43-A vs SUM43-N
Steel · SUM43 temper comparison
SUM43-A and SUM43-N are two conditions of the same steel grade, SUM43: A (solution annealed) versus N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. SUM43-N is the stronger of the two: yield strength 400 MPa (58 ksi) against 345 MPa (50 ksi) for SUM43-A, about 16% more; tensile strength follows at 715 MPa (104 ksi) vs 585 MPa (84.8 ksi). In exchange, SUM43-A is the more ductile: elongation 20% versus 15% for SUM43-N, and SUM43-N is harder (205 HB vs 167 HB). SUM43-N runs hotter in service (400°C vs 300°C continuous).
SUM43-AChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded.
SUM43-NChoose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.
SUM43-A vs SUM43-N: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

SUM43-A vs SUM43-N — frequently asked
Is SUM43-N stronger than SUM43-A?
Yes. SUM43-N has a typical yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) against 345 MPa (50 ksi) for SUM43-A — about 16% more. Tensile strength is 715 MPa (104 ksi) vs 585 MPa (84.8 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, A or N?
CD is the default SUM43 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither A nor N). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which welds better, SUM43-A or SUM43-N?
SUM43-N. Its weldability rates poor (25/100) against poor (20/100) for SUM43-A.
