Steel GCr9-CD vs GCr9-HR

Steel · GCr9 temper comparison

GCr9-CD and GCr9-HR are two conditions of the same steel grade, GCr9: CD (cold drawn) versus HR (hot rolled). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. GCr9-CD is the stronger of the two: yield strength 600 MPa (87 ksi) against 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) for GCr9-HR, about 9% more. In exchange, GCr9-HR is the more ductile: elongation 12% versus 10% for GCr9-CD, and GCr9-HR is harder (270 HB vs 225 HB). GCr9-HR runs hotter in service (200°C vs 180°C continuous). On the shop floor, GCr9-CD machines more easily (fair vs poor).

GCr9-CDChoose it when strength drives the design, or when the part is machined in volume.

GCr9-HRChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.

GCr9-CD vs GCr9-HR — frequently asked

Is GCr9-CD stronger than GCr9-HR?

Yes. GCr9-CD has a typical yield strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) against 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) for GCr9-HR — about 9% more. Tensile strength is 750 MPa (109 ksi) vs 900 MPa (131 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, CD or HR?

A is the default GCr9 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither CD nor HR). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, GCr9-CD or GCr9-HR?

GCr9-CD. Its machinability rates fair (50/100) against poor (28/100) for GCr9-HR.
