Steel GCr15 Hot Rolled vs GCr15 Normalized
Steel · GCr15 temper comparison
GCr15 Hot Rolled and GCr15 Normalized are two conditions of the same steel grade, GCr15: Hot Rolled versus Normalized. The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. GCr15 Normalized is the stronger of the two: yield strength 650 MPa (94.3 ksi) against 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) for GCr15 Hot Rolled, about 18% more; tensile strength follows at 1,100 MPa (160 ksi) vs 900 MPa (131 ksi). In exchange, GCr15 Hot Rolled is the more ductile: elongation 12% versus 10% for GCr15 Normalized, and GCr15 Normalized is harder (320 HB vs 260 HB). GCr15 Normalized runs hotter in service (200°C vs 150°C continuous).

GCr15 NormalizedChoose it when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.
GCr15 Hot Rolled vs GCr15 Normalized: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

GCr15 Hot Rolled vs GCr15 Normalized — frequently asked
Is GCr15 Normalized stronger than GCr15 Hot Rolled?
Yes. GCr15 Normalized has a typical yield strength of 650 MPa (94.3 ksi) against 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) for GCr15 Hot Rolled — about 18% more. Tensile strength is 1,100 MPa (160 ksi) vs 900 MPa (131 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, Hot Rolled or Normalized?
Annealed is the default GCr15 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither Hot Rolled nor Normalized). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, GCr15 Hot Rolled or GCr15 Normalized?
GCr15 Hot Rolled, by a small margin. Both rate poor for machinability — 30/100 against 25/100 for GCr15 Normalized.
