Steel EN8-HR vs EN8 Q&T
Steel · EN8 temper comparison
EN8-HR and EN8 Q&T are two conditions of the same steel grade, EN8: HR (hot rolled) versus Q&T (quenched and tempered). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. EN8 Q&T is the stronger of the two: yield strength 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) against 310 MPa (45 ksi) for EN8-HR, about 100% more; tensile strength follows at 850 MPa (123 ksi) vs 580 MPa (84.1 ksi). In exchange, EN8-HR is the more ductile: elongation 18% versus 15% for EN8 Q&T, and EN8 Q&T is harder (248 HB vs 179 HB). EN8-HR runs hotter in service (400°C vs 350°C continuous). On the shop floor, EN8-HR machines more easily (good vs fair) and EN8-HR welds better (fair vs poor).
EN8-HRChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.
EN8 Q&TChoose it when strength drives the design.
EN8-HR vs EN8 Q&T: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

EN8-HR vs EN8 Q&T — frequently asked
Is EN8 Q&T stronger than EN8-HR?
Yes. EN8 Q&T has a typical yield strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) against 310 MPa (45 ksi) for EN8-HR — about 100% more. Tensile strength is 850 MPa (123 ksi) vs 580 MPa (84.1 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HR or Q&T?
HR is the default EN8 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, EN8-HR or EN8 Q&T?
EN8-HR. Its machinability rates good (60/100) against fair (50/100) for EN8 Q&T; for welding the order is EN8-HR first (fair, 45/100) then EN8 Q&T (poor, 30/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in EN8-HR and EN8 Q&T side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.
Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
