Steel EN31-HR vs EN31-IH
Steel · EN31 temper comparison
EN31-HR and EN31-IH are two conditions of the same steel grade, EN31: HR (hot rolled) versus IH (induction hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. EN31-IH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,900 MPa (276 ksi) against 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) for EN31-HR, about 3.5 times as much; tensile strength follows at 2,200 MPa (319 ksi) vs 900 MPa (131 ksi). In exchange, EN31-HR is the more ductile: elongation 12% versus 1% for EN31-IH, and EN31-IH is harder (630 HB vs 280 HB). EN31-HR runs hotter in service (200°C vs 150°C continuous) and EN31-HR conducts electricity better (7.8 % IACS vs 7 % IACS). On the shop floor, EN31-HR machines more easily (poor vs not recommended).

EN31-IHChoose it when strength drives the design.
EN31-HR vs EN31-IH: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

EN31-HR vs EN31-IH — frequently asked
Is EN31-IH stronger than EN31-HR?
Yes. EN31-IH has a typical yield strength of 1,900 MPa (276 ksi) against 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) for EN31-HR — about 3.5 times as much. Tensile strength is 2,200 MPa (319 ksi) vs 900 MPa (131 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, HR or IH?
ANN is the default EN31 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither HR nor IH). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, EN31-HR or EN31-IH?
EN31-HR. Its machinability rates poor (30/100) against not recommended (8/100) for EN31-IH; for welding the order is EN31-HR first (not recommended, 12/100) then EN31-IH (not recommended, 3/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in EN31-HR and EN31-IH side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.
Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
