Steel C55-IH vs C55 +N

Steel · C55 temper comparison

C55-IH and C55 +N are two conditions of the same steel grade, C55: IH (induction hardened) versus +N (normalized). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. C55-IH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) against 400 MPa (58 ksi) for C55 +N, about 38% more; tensile strength follows at 870 MPa (126 ksi) vs 750 MPa (109 ksi). In exchange, C55 +N is the more ductile: elongation 16% versus 12% for C55-IH, and C55-IH is harder (255 HB vs 220 HB). C55 +N runs hotter in service (400°C vs 250°C continuous). On the shop floor, C55 +N machines more easily (fair vs not recommended) and C55 +N welds better (poor vs not recommended).

C55-IH vs C55 +N — frequently asked

Is C55-IH stronger than C55 +N?

Yes. C55-IH has a typical yield strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) against 400 MPa (58 ksi) for C55 +N — about 38% more. Tensile strength is 870 MPa (126 ksi) vs 750 MPa (109 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, IH or +N?

+N is the default C55 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, C55-IH or C55 +N?

C55 +N. Its machinability rates fair (45/100) against not recommended (12/100) for C55-IH; for welding the order is C55 +N first (poor, 30/100) then C55-IH (not recommended, 10/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in C55-IH and C55 +N side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
