Steel C50-A vs C50-IH

Steel · C50 temper comparison

C50-A and C50-IH are two conditions of the same steel grade, C50: A (solution annealed) versus IH (induction hardened). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. C50-IH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) against 365 MPa (52.9 ksi) for C50-A, about 37% more; tensile strength follows at 800 MPa (116 ksi) vs 636 MPa (92.2 ksi). In exchange, C50-A is the more ductile: elongation 24% versus 15% for C50-IH, and C50-IH is harder (600 HB vs 187 HB). C50-A runs hotter in service (350°C vs 180°C continuous). On the shop floor, C50-A machines more easily (good vs poor) and C50-A welds better (poor vs not recommended).

C50-AChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.

C50-A vs C50-IH — frequently asked

Is C50-IH stronger than C50-A?

Yes. C50-IH has a typical yield strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) against 365 MPa (52.9 ksi) for C50-A — about 37% more. Tensile strength is 800 MPa (116 ksi) vs 636 MPa (92.2 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, A or IH?

N is the default C50 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither A nor IH). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, C50-A or C50-IH?

C50-A. Its machinability rates good (60/100) against poor (15/100) for C50-IH; for welding the order is C50-A first (poor, 32/100) then C50-IH (not recommended, 10/100).

Upload a CAD file and FabDigit prices the part in C50-A and C50-IH side by side — material, machining time, tolerance and finish in one quote. Certified material data ships with the order on request.

Typical handbook values for the conditions named above, normalised for comparison. Hardness on non-Brinell scales is converted approximately for charting only. Request certified data with your order for design-critical properties.
