Steel A3 Annealed vs A3 Nitrided

Steel · A3 temper comparison

A3 Annealed and A3 Nitrided are two conditions of the same steel grade, A3: Annealed versus Nitrided. The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. A3 Nitrided is the stronger of the two: yield strength 1,750 MPa (254 ksi) against 430 MPa (62.4 ksi) for A3 Annealed, about 4.1 times as much; tensile strength follows at 2,000 MPa (290 ksi) vs 760 MPa (110 ksi). In exchange, A3 Annealed is the more ductile: elongation 20% versus 1.5% for A3 Nitrided, and A3 Nitrided is harder (59 HRC vs 19 HRC). A3 Nitrided runs hotter in service (400°C vs 200°C continuous). On the shop floor, A3 Annealed machines more easily (fair vs not recommended) and A3 Annealed welds better (poor vs not recommended).

A3 Annealed vs A3 Nitrided — frequently asked

Is A3 Nitrided stronger than A3 Annealed?

Yes. A3 Nitrided has a typical yield strength of 1,750 MPa (254 ksi) against 430 MPa (62.4 ksi) for A3 Annealed — about 4.1 times as much. Tensile strength is 2,000 MPa (290 ksi) vs 760 MPa (110 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, Annealed or Nitrided?

Annealed is the default A3 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

Which is easier to machine, A3 Annealed or A3 Nitrided?

A3 Annealed. Its machinability rates fair (38/100) against not recommended (5/100) for A3 Nitrided; for welding the order is A3 Annealed first (poor, 15/100) then A3 Nitrided (not recommended, 3/100).
