Steel 20Cr3-CH vs 20Cr3 +H
Steel · 20Cr3 temper comparison
20Cr3-CH and 20Cr3 +H are two conditions of the same steel grade, 20Cr3: CH (carburized and hardened) versus +H (hardenability-guaranteed (Jominy band), shown after direct hardening +…). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. 20Cr3-CH is the stronger of the two: yield strength 850 MPa (123 ksi) against 750 MPa (109 ksi) for 20Cr3 +H, about 13% more; tensile strength follows at 1,150 MPa (167 ksi) vs 1,000 MPa (145 ksi). In exchange, 20Cr3 +H is the more ductile: elongation 11% versus 9% for 20Cr3-CH, and 20Cr3 +H is harder (320 HB vs 170 HB). 20Cr3 +H runs hotter in service (180°C vs 150°C continuous). On the shop floor, 20Cr3 +H machines more easily (fair vs not recommended) and 20Cr3 +H welds better (poor vs not recommended).
20Cr3-CHChoose it when strength drives the design.
20Cr3 +HChoose it when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.
20Cr3-CH vs 20Cr3 +H: propertiesHow to read these bars
- One bar per material. A full bar is the highest value among all steel grades in the FabDigit library; each bar is drawn as a share of that.
- The better value (by the usual engineering direction) is in bold. Rows with no direction — density, thermal conductivity — have no bold.
- Values are typical room-temperature figures for the condition named on each card.
- Confirm against the certified mill or resin datasheet before design release.

20Cr3-CH vs 20Cr3 +H — frequently asked
Is 20Cr3-CH stronger than 20Cr3 +H?
Yes. 20Cr3-CH has a typical yield strength of 850 MPa (123 ksi) against 750 MPa (109 ksi) for 20Cr3 +H — about 13% more. Tensile strength is 1,150 MPa (167 ksi) vs 1,000 MPa (145 ksi).
Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, CH or +H?
+A is the default 20Cr3 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither CH nor +H). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.
Which is easier to machine, 20Cr3-CH or 20Cr3 +H?
20Cr3 +H. Its machinability rates fair (35/100) against not recommended (10/100) for 20Cr3-CH; for welding the order is 20Cr3 +H first (poor, 25/100) then 20Cr3-CH (not recommended, 10/100).
