Magnesium Alloy ZM5-T2 vs ZM5-T4

Magnesium Alloy · ZM5 temper comparison

ZM5-T2 and ZM5-T4 are two conditions of the same magnesium alloy grade, ZM5: T2 (cooled from hot working, cold worked and naturally aged) versus T4 (solution heat treated and naturally aged). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. ZM5-T4 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 90 MPa (13.1 ksi) against 85 MPa (12.3 ksi) for ZM5-T2, about 6% more; tensile strength follows at 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) vs 160 MPa (23.2 ksi). ZM5-T4 is the more ductile: elongation 8% versus 3% for ZM5-T2, and ZM5-T4 is harder (55 HB vs 52 HB). ZM5-T2 conducts heat better (70 W/m·K vs 51 W/m·K).

ZM5-T4Choose it when strength drives the design, or when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded.

ZM5-T2 vs ZM5-T4 — frequently asked

Is ZM5-T4 stronger than ZM5-T2?

Yes. ZM5-T4 has a typical yield strength of 90 MPa (13.1 ksi) against 85 MPa (12.3 ksi) for ZM5-T2 — about 6% more. Tensile strength is 250 MPa (36.3 ksi) vs 160 MPa (23.2 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, T2 or T4?

T4 is the default ZM5 condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

When should I choose ZM5-T2 over ZM5-T4?

Pick ZM5-T4 when strength drives the design, or when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded.
