Magnesium Alloy WE54-F vs WE54-T5

Magnesium Alloy · WE54 temper comparison

WE54-F and WE54-T5 are two conditions of the same magnesium alloy grade, WE54: F (as fabricated) versus T5 (cooled from hot working and artificially aged). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. WE54-T5 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 160 MPa (23.2 ksi) against 120 MPa (17.4 ksi) for WE54-F, about 33% more; tensile strength follows at 225 MPa (32.6 ksi) vs 180 MPa (26.1 ksi). In exchange, WE54-F is the more ductile: elongation 3% versus 2.5% for WE54-T5, and WE54-T5 is harder (78 HB vs 65 HB). WE54-T5 runs hotter in service (250°C vs 200°C continuous).

WE54-F vs WE54-T5 — frequently asked

Is WE54-T5 stronger than WE54-F?

Yes. WE54-T5 has a typical yield strength of 160 MPa (23.2 ksi) against 120 MPa (17.4 ksi) for WE54-F — about 33% more. Tensile strength is 225 MPa (32.6 ksi) vs 180 MPa (26.1 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, F or T5?

T6 is the default WE54 condition in the FabDigit quote flow (neither F nor T5). The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

When should I choose WE54-F over WE54-T5?

Pick WE54-F when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded. Pick WE54-T5 when strength drives the design, or when the part sees heat.
