Aluminum AC5A-T6 vs AC5A-T7

Aluminum · AC5A temper comparison

AC5A-T6 and AC5A-T7 are two conditions of the same aluminum grade, AC5A: T6 (solution heat treated and artificially aged) versus T7 (solution heat treated and overaged (stabilized)). The chemistry is identical, so every difference below comes from the condition. AC5A-T6 is the stronger of the two: yield strength 255 MPa (37 ksi) against 205 MPa (29.7 ksi) for AC5A-T7, about 24% more; tensile strength follows at 295 MPa (42.8 ksi) vs 245 MPa (35.5 ksi). In exchange, AC5A-T7 is the more ductile: elongation 1.5% versus 1% for AC5A-T6, and AC5A-T6 is harder (105 HB vs 95 HB). AC5A-T7 runs hotter in service (280°C vs 220°C continuous) and AC5A-T7 conducts heat better (140 W/m·K vs 122 W/m·K).

AC5A-T6 vs AC5A-T7 — frequently asked

Is AC5A-T6 stronger than AC5A-T7?

Yes. AC5A-T6 has a typical yield strength of 255 MPa (37 ksi) against 205 MPa (29.7 ksi) for AC5A-T7 — about 24% more. Tensile strength is 295 MPa (42.8 ksi) vs 245 MPa (35.5 ksi).

Which condition does FabDigit quote by default, T6 or T7?

T6 is the default AC5A condition in the FabDigit quote flow. The other condition is available on request or by drawing note — specify it in the material field or the part notes and the quote is priced for it.

When should I choose AC5A-T6 over AC5A-T7?

Pick AC5A-T6 when strength drives the design. Pick AC5A-T7 when the part is bent, formed or impact-loaded, or when the part sees heat.
