Pick by situation

“Best” depends on what you are buying. These are the nine situations that cover most online CNC orders, with the platform whose published facts fit first and the runners-up worth a second quote. FabDigit runs this site; where another platform fits better, it says so.

Lowest price on a like-for-like quoteFabDigitAlso consider: Send the competing quote to FabDigit firstFabDigit prints a price-beat offer on every quote: send the competing quote for the same part, quantity, material, tolerance and finish and it is almost always beaten. The ten, ranked by fit

FabDigit first — we run this site and say so, as every platform does on its own comparison pages. The other nine follow by how many CNC buyers each fits: instant-quotable CNC breadth, published tolerance and lead-time policy, certifications and shipping reach. Every fact on every card, ours included, is the verified one from the table above.

Online CNC machining services — FAQ

What is the best online CNC machining service?

It depends on what you are buying. FabDigit has the widest material, finish and heat-treatment menu priced in one instant quote (790 grades, 150+ finishes, 30 heat treatments), an engineer reviewing every quote, 4 inspection levels and 8 certificates chosen in the form, and a price-beat offer printed on every quote. Xometry instant-quotes the widest range of processes with ITAR, AS9100D and CMMC L2; Protolabs is fastest for a 1-day prototype from its own factories; Fictiv fits managed programs; RapidDirect holds ISO 13485 / IATF 16949 at company level if China shipping and duties are acceptable. The decision table above maps each situation to a start.

Which online CNC services give an instant quote?

Xometry, Fictiv, Protolabs Network (Hubs), FabDigit, RapidDirect, eMachineShop (popular materials), Quickparts and JLCCNC price a STEP file on upload. Protolabs returns DFM and pricing within a few hours. Jiga is human-quoted by design, usually within hours.

What tolerance do online CNC services hold without a drawing?

Most US platforms default to ±0.005" (0.127 mm) per ISO 2768 on metals when no drawing is supplied — Xometry and Protolabs state this explicitly; Fictiv and Hubs use ISO 2768 medium; RapidDirect ISO 2768-m; FabDigit ±0.025 mm (±0.001") standard on machined features. Tighter tolerances are quoted from the drawing on every platform; JLCCNC publishes ±0.05 mm.

Which online CNC services are ITAR registered?

Xometry, Protolabs, eMachineShop (M52808) and Quickparts state ITAR registration; Jiga offers ITAR-registered shops on request. Fictiv states it does not support ITAR; Protolabs Network, RapidDirect and JLCCNC do not offer it. FabDigit places AS9100 work only with partners certified to that standard and does not advertise ITAR.

Do online machine shops have minimum orders?

None of the ten publish a minimum quantity — all quote a single part. SendCutSend (not in this list because its CNC is limited to 6061 billet) requires $39 for free shipping. Per-part price falls steeply from 1 to 10 to 100 units; see the FabDigit CNC machining cost guide for sampled curves.

How long does online CNC machining take?

Standard tiers: Xometry 3–7 business days, Protolabs 3 days, FabDigit 5–7 days (from 2 days on simple 3-axis parts), Fictiv 1–10 days, Hubs, Jiga and RapidDirect from 5 days, Quickparts 3–15 days, JLCCNC a 3-day build plus shipping from China. Expedites reach 1 day at Xometry, Protolabs, Fictiv and RapidDirect for parts that qualify. Anodizing, plating and powder coat add 3–7 days everywhere.

Is a marketplace or a shop with its own machines better?

Own factories (Protolabs, RapidDirect’s own plants, JLCCNC) give one process and one QMS; networks (Xometry, Fictiv, Hubs, FabDigit) give capacity and process breadth but the shop is chosen for you. The practical test is who signs the quality documents: FabDigit and Fictiv review inspection results in-house before release; Xometry includes standard inspection with FAIR optional.
