What is T1 Q&T?
T1 Q&T is T1 heat treated to Q&T — pick when shock loading or large sections demand toughness over ultimate edge hardness (punches, broaches, form tools). T1 Q&T has a yield strength of 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 2,000 MPa (290 ksi) — stronger than 73% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 220 GPa (31.9 Msi). T1 Q&T has a density of 8.7 g/cm³ (0.314 lb/in³), heavier than 99% of steel grades. It melts at 1,340°C (2,444 °F). Annealed is the default condition FabDigit quotes; Q&T is available on request or by drawing note.

Working with T1 Q&T
Is T1 easy to machine?
Machine only in the annealed condition with rigid setups, sharp cobalt-HSS or coated-carbide tooling and low speeds; after hardening only grinding (CBN/SiC wheels) or EDM is practical.
Can T1 be welded?
Not a structural weld metal — repair weld with matching HSS electrodes at 500–550 °C preheat, then immediately re-temper; risk of quench cracking is high.
Can T1 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forge 1100–1150 °C (never below ~900 °C), cool slowly and full-anneal at 850–900 °C; cold forming is impractical.
What surface finishes work on T1?
Black-oxide, steam-blue, nitride or PVD TiN/TiAlN coatings are standard for cutting tools; unprotected surfaces must be oiled since the 4 % Cr gives no stainless behaviour.
